You’ve probably never heard of Thomas Townshend. He was a British politician who held the position of Home Secretary when the First Fleet set sail for Botany Bay.
Importantly for our story, his title was “1st Viscount Sydney of St Leonards”. So to honour him, both Sydney and the suburb of St Leonards were named after him.
Originally St Leonards stretched from North Sydney (including North Sydney which did not exist yet) to Gore Hill. The township of the original St Leonards in 1883 became North Sydney while the North Shore’s first train line opened in 1890 running between St Leonards and Hornsby.
