The North Shore refers to the area of Sydney bounded by the north shore of Sydney Harbour, Hornsby, Middle Harbour and the Lane Cove River.
When the First Fleet first arrived, there was limited settlement on the North Shore. The area was rugged, had little agricultural potential and could only be accessed by boat across the harbour.
In the early days access to the North Shore was primarily via the Lane Cove River. While the 1890 opening of the first railway between Hornsby and St Leonards helped the area develop, it did not really take off until 1932. That was the year the Sydney Harbour Bridge opened and led to significant growth in all the North Shore suburbs we know today.
